She hated lying to him. It seemed that honesty was the very least she could offer in exchange for him saving her life. But if she said the words, even if they were spoken with the best of intent, she would be undoing everything, absolutely everything, that sheâd done to ensure her safety. It was too big of a risk.
She knew next to nothing about Jamie Weathers. Other than the fact that he was a decent, caring physician who was going above and beyond to care for a patient. Other than heâd done everything he could to make her feel safe and confident that she was going to recover. Other than that heâd made her laugh and was constantly trying to feed her.
She guessed she did know a few things. Nice things.
He was a pilot. That had come as a surprise. She suspected he had a few more aces up his sleeve, and quite frankly, clichés aside, she wanted to roll up his cuffs and fish âem out. One by one, until she understood the whole man.
To what purpose, she argued with herself. Was she so interested in self-torture? Because thatâs what it would amount to when she had to leave him again. She would know more, miss more, regret more. Ugh.
It wasnât as if sheâd not considered the more intimate aspects of her situation when sheâd first contemplated her arrangement with Regan Jones. She was thirty-two years old. If she found somebody who was really a nobody, somebody who was happy living a low-visibility life. Marriage was out of the question. That was a legal relationship and, like all legal relationships, would invite scrutiny that she wanted to avoid. But if she connected with the right person, who was happy sharing a life in a less formal setting, just maybe it could work. Just maybe she could still have some semblance of what she wanted.
It would not be easy but sheâd told herself that it would be years before she was ready to embark upon a relationship. By then, sheâd have been living as Regan Jones for so long that sheâd really think of herself that way. Layla Morant and the life sheâd left behind would simply be a distant memory. Sheâd have settled into her new life, gotten comfortable with it. Only then would she be ready to handle navigating a relationship built upon half-truths.
She certainly wasnât ready to do that less than a week into her new life.
Not when she was ill and her wits felt scattered, not laser-focused on keeping her story straight.
Not with Jamie Weathers, local hero. The antithesis of a nobody.
So it was really impossible to share secrets. She simply
